Sports

As an air cadet you can take part in seven main sports at different levels: athleticscross countryfootballrugbyhockeynetball and swimming.

Whatever you do it'll help improve your physical fitness levels and your team skills. If you're good enough at your favourite sport we'll notice, and can help you take it to the next level.

There are frequent tournaments between squadrons, where the best players are selected to represent the wing. The same then happens for the region, with wings competing against each other and the best players making up the regional team. If you make it through each of those selections then you're good, really good. You'll be at the top of your game and will have a shot at representing the entire cadet corps.

At the squadron we often run fun sports sessions and have a range of equipment such as a badminton set, table tennis table and space for football. We also regularly run sports sessions that can add do your Duke of Edinburgh's awards sports section!

Swimming

There are two age categories to any cadet competition and those are the junior and senior groups. For swimming juniors fall under the age of 16 and when racing only have to swim two lengths of a twenty five meter swimming pool while seniors have to swim 4 lengths and fall between the ages of 16-20. Cadets often mistake that you have to be good at swimming in order to race but the truth is you don't. The main reason cadets go to events such as swimming is to meet friends they are only able to see at cadet events and to have fun. There are 3 levels to swimming and that is wing, regional and core. Wing is when squadrons in a local area compete to determine the best swimmer and is the level where most competitors just go to meet friends. Regional is when wings compete within themselves to find the best regional swimmers who are then sent to core. Core swimming is the hardest of all the levels and is where swimmers from all over the U.K. swim to decide the core champions. However as I mentioned before going to cadet competitions like swimming is not about winning or losing but about meeting new people and having fun.
